Expedition Rainforest is the Greensboro Science Center’s latest endeavor, featuring the Biodome and Aquatic Rehabilitation and Conservation Center (ARCC). This project aims to bring the vibrant ecosystem of a tropical rainforest to the Triad. Once completed, the five-story Biodome, spanning the length of a football field, will house diverse species including sloths, toucans, clouded leopards, and colorful reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. The ETFE-enclosed facility will immerse guests in a lush environment of rockscapes, waterfalls, and tropical foliage, all illuminated by natural daylight.

Adjacent to the Biodome, the ARCC will expand the Science Center’s animal rehabilitation efforts. Together, these facilities will offer families an engaging exploration of the planet’s most diverse ecosystems, enriching children’s understanding of wildlife and conservation.

GSC + SAMET CAMPUS PROJECTS

Cole Family Monarch Conservation Center & Butterfly House

The Cole Family Monarch Conservation Center and Butterfly House opened to the public in 2022 and provides a dedicated space for native butterflies, moths, and pollinator gardens aiming to enhance conservation awareness for these vital species.

This project marks the third collaboration between Samet and the Greensboro Science Center, following the completion of the 11-acre zoo expansion and the tiger enclosure project.

wiseman aquarium expansion

The aquarium expansion added an impressive 5,300 SF single-story, steel-framed building to the Greensboro Science Center. Decorated with an architectural aluminum rain screen veneer, the new structure aligns with the aesthetic of the building’s existing metal panels.

Within the steel-framed building, the aquarium houses seventeen new tanks of various sizes along with two independent pods that contain standalone tanks accompanied by an interactive image wall. To ensure complete safety and uninterrupted functionality, every piece of tank equipment – pumps, heat exchangers, and chillers – is reinforced with its own dedicated generator.

Zoo Expansion

The Greensboro Science Center, a well-loved destination for families, underwent an exciting expansion between 2019 and 2021. To better accommodate the growing membership and increasing foot traffic, Samet built an additional 11 acres of exhibits and walkways into this festive and family-friendly destination.

“Revolution Ridge,” is meticulously designed to mimic the natural habitats of various species, from exotic Pygmy hippos and Okapis to vibrant cassowaries and Chilean flamingos. Visitors can observe these creatures in climate-appropriate sections of a ridge that naturally descends to a pond, complete with additional water features.

Battleground Park

Samet successfully completed a comprehensive renovation of Battleground Park at the Greensboro Science Center, transforming approximately nine acres into a vibrant and engaging space.

The project included the development of a new surface parking lot, the widening of Orman Road, and the construction of modern public restrooms and a visitor services building. Enhancements to the site also feature covered shelters, a scenic water feature, a canopy walk with a zipline, a lakefront boardwalk, a pedestrian promenade, and multiple play areas, offering diverse recreational opportunities for visitors.

the rotary club of greensboro carousel

Built in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Greensboro and the City of Greensboro, this carousel has become a hallmark of the city, bestowed upon the Battleground Parks District and presently managed by the Greensboro Science Center.

Positioned on a hill overlooking a lake, the carousel accommodates seventy-two riders at once, inviting them to choose from fifty-six distinct and meticulously handcrafted wooden animals. The perimeter showcases an impressive octagonal structure with custom-made partial window walls and drop-down garage-style doors with windows, ensuring year-round operation. The facility also includes a nearby building equipped with restrooms to cater to the riders’ needs.
